One of the most notable updates is the New Zealand government’s investment of NZ$76 million in a new strategy to prevent and minimize gambling harm. This strategy focuses on five key areas of problem gambling, demonstrating the government’s commitment to tackling gambling-related issues across the country. This initiative reflects a broader push to address the social and economic impacts of gambling, particularly in vulnerable communities.

Additionally, SkyCity Entertainment Group, one of New Zealand’s major casino operators, reported a challenging financial year with a net loss of NZ$140.4 million. This comes amid various regulatory pressures, including anti-money laundering settlements and temporary casino closures, which have significantly impacted the company’s operations.

There are also ongoing discussions about regulating online casinos in New Zealand, with the government expecting a regulated market to generate around $500 million. This move is part of a broader effort to control offshore gambling and ensure that local regulations protect consumers.

These developments indicate a dynamic and rapidly changing gambling environment in New Zealand, with increased regulatory scrutiny and efforts to mitigate the social harms associated with gambling.

We had our Board member Bully and his partner join us in our visit to Te Hā Oranga on Tuesday. We were able to present to them all and learn about all the services they provide so where we are best suited and how we are able to best awhi their most vulnerable. Whanaungatanga was the focus.

Daffodil Day. We have all been affected by someone who has/is suffering from some form of cancer and for Ngā Manga Pūriri we don't have to look much further than within our own team. We were frivideldged to attend a Daffodil Day Breakfast Fundraiser in Kaikohe at Northland College. Following on we will be at Te Kona for the Tamariki Vision Testing Day. This is an all day event where all the schools of Kaikohe will eventually present to have tamariki tested.

This event , again, is to support and awhi our most vulnerable and ensure that they have all the correct information to dream and aspire for more. Services like ours and others will support our whānau to address issues which may be holding them back and, we are a mobile service so we are taking the services to them.

Northlanders spend $7.4m on pokies in first quarter alone - at $82,000 a day

Northlanders spent $7.4 million on pokie machines in the first quarter of this year, or just over $82,000 a day, as a significant investment to prevent and minimise harm caused by gambling is announced.

Figures from the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) show Northlanders sank $82,222 a day on Class 4 gaming machines in the first quarter, compared with $7.9m, or $87,777 daily, in the December quarter.

A staggering $36m was spent on pokie machines in Northland last year compared with $32.7m the year before.

Societies that give grants from pokie machine profits in Northland include the Oxford Sports Trust, Four Winds Foundation, Grassroots Trust, Pub Charity, Rano Community Trust, The Lion Foundation, Pelorus Trust, Trillian Trust, Bluesky Community Trust, Grassroots Trust and Kaiwaka Sports Association.

The Government is investing $76m into a new Strategy to Prevent and Minimise Gambling Harm nationwide that will include education initiatives to reduce harm to young people, and better support given to vulnerable communities including Māori, Pasifika and Asians.

"Gambling harm is a serious public health issue and can have a devastating effect on the wellbeing of individuals, whānau and communities. One in five New Zealanders will experience gambling harm in their lives, or know someone close who does," Health Minister Andrew Little said.

The strategy will also include new and expanded digital services and supports, and a de-stigmatisation initiative to help change the conversation around gambling harm and encourage people to seek help.

, specialists in problem gambling and addiction services in Northland, is supportive of the Government's strategy towards combating the problem.

Practice lead Cordelia Waetford said since there were a lot of barriers preventing gamblers from accessing treatment, strategies brought hope for initiatives such as korero around gambling harm.

"We know pokies are the most harmful form of gambling, and funding is necessary for us to continue our work in reaching marginalised and targeted groups that are the most vulnerable."

The Government is looking into strengthening regulations (rules) to minimise harm from Class 4 gambling (pokies) in New Zealand.

Pokies in our pubs, clubs and TAB NZ outlets are the most harmful form of gambling in New Zealand. Most of the people who contact gambling help service providers say pokies are their source of harm. Māori and Pacific communities, who may already be experiencing financial or social challenges, experience disproportionate harm from a concentration of pokies in their neighbourhoods.

Strengthening regulations could help prevent and minimise the risk of harmful gambling for whānau and communities. The Government is considering a range of options focused on how staff in pubs and clubs identify and deal with harmful gambling, potential changes to the machines and opportunities for more penalties.

This is the first stage of the Government’s steps to prevent and minimise harm from pokies.

Gambling Harm Awareness Week

Gambling Harm Awareness Week - 31st Oct- 6th Sept

With a focus on youth we partnered up with artist collective Elevate Minds and facilitated workshops on safe gaming with the tamariki of Te Rangi Aniwaniwa.

Gaming is the act of playing electronic games or video games. Excessive gaming can lead to addiction and can be a pre-cursor to online gambling.

The tamariki co-designed tikanga for safe gaming and came up with their own kupu “Kia Tika te Tākaro” which translates to Play Safe!

On Friday 4th September the tamariki of Te Rangi Aniwaniwa expressed their learnings through a live mural which was completed inside the school's gymnasium. The gymnasium is a hub for sport in Kaitaia and is used weekly by approximately 1000 people.

The tamariki who were involved in the workshops and the mural were presented with a t.shirt - “Kia Tika te Tākaro”.

Ngā Mihi to the staff and tamariki of Te Rangi Aniwaniwa for allowing Ngā Manga Pūriri to workshop and raise awareness around safe gaming.
